Houston- When Tyrann Mathieu was released by the Arizona Cardinals during the off-season in a cap savings move, teams from around the league flocked to sign the talented defensive back. A tweet from Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt helped start the recruiting to get Mathieu to Houston and soon after the rest was history.
One team that worked real hard to land Mathieu was the Cleveland Browns, interim head coach Gregg Williams discussed the Browns full court press to land Mathieu. When discussing the Texans defense, Williams talked about Mathieu's impact and him personally trying to convince Mathieu to sign with the Browns.
"I’m sure Tyrann (Mathieu) will tell you that I was trying like heck to recruit him to come here," Williams said of Mathieu. "He ended up coming to the Texans instead of coming here this past year. I think he’s done a very good job. He’s smart as all get out on how he’s able to help other people play around him because he has a lot of awareness of where the ball’s going. Those are some of the things you really can’t coach. You’re just born with those things.”
Mathieu has been a difference maker for the Texans leading a revamped secondary and most importantly becoming a bonafide leader inside the locker room. Mathieu talked about the Browns trying to lure him to Cleveland.
“Obviously, it was an interesting conversation," Mathieu said of speaking to Williams when he was a free agent. "He’s a guy that I’ve followed in the league, especially growing up in New Orleans and the different things he did with New Orleans. It was an interesting conversation, but at the end of the day, I didn’t feel like that was the right fit for me.”
Through 12 weeks, Mathieu has racked up 66 total tackles, 3.0 sacks, 5 pass deflections, 4 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions and a fumble recovery. He joined former Texans ILB Brian Cushing (2011) as the only Texans player in franchise history to record 60 total tackles, 3.0 sacks and two interceptions in the first 10 games of a season.
