INSTANT REACTION: Sam Ehlinger, Texas escape Lubbock with 41-34 victory

Texas QB's 29-yard TD pass to Lil'Jordan Humphrey answered Texas Tech comeback.

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas fended off Texas Tech’s furious fourth-quarter comeback as Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger led a heroic scoring drive for a 41-34 victory on Saturday night at Jones AT&T Stadium.

The Horns led 34-17 in the fourth quarter before Texas Tech QB Jett Duffey led the Red Raider offense on three scoring drives to tie it.

But Ehlinger, who took over with 1:45 left in the fourth quarter, coolly led Texas into Texas Tech territory. The Longhorns QB finished the drive by hitting Lil’Jordan Humphrey, who reached high over Texas Tech defensive back Demarcus Fields, to catch a 29-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left.

The Red Raiders attempt at a desperation answer failed to cross the 50-yard line.

Ehlinger passed for 312 yards and four touchdowns in leading Texas to its fifth-straight victory in Lubbock.

Duffey passed for 444 yards and four touchdowns. Texas Tech wide receiver Antoine Wesley caught 8 passes for 171 yards, including the 9-yard TD pass that tied it at 34 with 1:45 left.

However, Duffey lost two second half fumbles as he was trying to extend running plays. Both fumbles were lost deep in Texas territory, wiping out a pair of Red Raider scoring chances.

Texas didn’t turn the ball over and punted just three times as the Longhorns consistently kept the ball away from the Texas Tech offense. The Red Raiders out-gained Texas 595-469, but the Longhorns won the time-of-possession battle by more than six minutes.
