Cowgirls Tennis Turns Saturday Disappointment into Sunday Celebration

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Wyoming tennis team (4-4 overall) rebounded from being shutout on Saturday by Nebraska to take an impressive 4-1 victory against Drake (3-5) on Sunday.

Wyoming got off to a fast start by earning the doubles point to go up 1-0. Seniors Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg defeated sophomore Liza Petushkova and senior Kenya Williams, 6-2, while junior Ana Royo and freshman Maria Oreshkina beat sophomore Carmen Palumbo and freshman Daria Walczak by the same score, 6-2. Freshmen Mihaela Kaftanova and Ida Krause were down 3-4 and didn’t finish.

The Cowgirls carried the momentum over to singles action as well with victories at the number two, three and six spots. Koonik won in straights sets over Palumbo, 6-4, 6-1, to make it 2-0. Drake picked up its first point of the day with Petushkova earning a 6-4, 6-0 win against van Der Ploeg. Kaftanova battled and took her match, 7-6, 6-1, over Neville, while Oreshkina clinched the victory with a tough three set win, 1-6, 6-0, 6-2. Matches with Royo and freshman Ana Fernandez weren’t finished.

The Cowgirls will return to the court next weekend against the Gonzaga Bulldogs, on Saturday, followed by a match with Eastern Washington on Sunday. The opening match will be at 2 p.m. MT in Spokane and an 11 a.m. start against the Eagles in Cheney.
